Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut is a German diplomat aged 42, married with four children. He holds a doctorate in history from the University of Cologne (1988). He has been an official at the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1987 and has served in:

- Vienna (Austria) from 1990 to 1993, with responsibility for disarmament negotiations;
- in Brussels from 1993 to 1995 as Policy Adviser for external relations;
- in Bonn (Germany) from 1995 to 1999 as Deputy Assistant Director at the Ministry for the Amsterdam IGC and the CFSP.

In 1999 he returned to Brussels as Spokesman for the German Permanent Representation to the European Union.

He is the author of several publications on the disarmament treaties and on European integration.
