Annalisa Giannella - an Italian national born in Bari in 1949. She has a degree in politics and was recruited by the General Secretariat of the Council in October 1972. In the course of her career as a European official, she has acquired a wide range of experience:
- up to March 1994 in the Community sector, more especially in the field of environmental protection policy and the completion of the internal market (financial services and company law in particular);
- in international negotiations in various configurations, taking charge of the secretarial services for the EEC-Switzerland agreement on insurance, the Lugano Convention with the EFTA countries and international Bankruptcy Convention;
- since April 1994 in CFSP and ESDP matters, first as Head of Division for Security Matters and then from September 1999, as Director for Security and Defence Policy.
